What is the name of the movie he is speaking of? Thanks!
Not a vegetarian of any here sort here, but I can respect Simon Hill's method of reasoning. "Mick The Vegan", not so much.
Population control was the answer. The Green Revolution provided the GMO's, Round UP resistant plants, irrigation schemes to make that answer laughed at. Now third world industrialization and US style living along with unrestrained population growth has compounded the problems of the 1970's with global warming. Eating vegetarian is not going to help this much if at all. I have no problem eating meat when I see "religious" people with large families to bolster their vanity.
I like the conversation, but what's up with the horrible audio quality?
Science is clear. You can be perfectly healthy without eating any animal products. So what moral justification do we have to exploit animals unnecessarily. That's animal cruelty
When people say "high fiber food is nutritious" I'm like how? How is something indigestible nutritious. You can digest it, you just poop it out.
Typically I enjoy your podcast, however, I found the discussion with your first guest way too myopic. I believe it would have been more interesting and informative had the topic been all processed meats (animal or plant based). Many of the points made apply just as well to processed animal products and there are way more of these products on the shelves. Neither is good for our health in large quantities and both drive profit for companies. Highlighting the reality of all processed food would have been interesting! Second guest, Simon Hill, on the other hand was well worth listening to imo.
"Long-Term Consequences of the Carnivore Diet
Following the carnivore diet for a prolonged long time could lead to a score of health issues. “It’s massively devoid in nutrients, carbs, and fiber which will most likely leave you feeling lacking in energy,” Ludlam-Raine said. Fiber isn’t found in animal products, and a lack of it could lead to constipation and upset in the gut microbiome. Avoiding fruits and vegetables can also mean missing out on key nutrients and vitamins, although supplements can help to make up for what carnivores lack in their diet. Plus, fruits and veggies are simply good for you. Eating plant-based foods is associated with a lower risk of heart disease, Alzheimer’s, type 2 diabetes, and other chronic health conditions, according to Healthline." Which information am I to believe? Btw, are there studies to support the health benefits of the carnivore diet?
I want to go on a carnivore diet, but there is so much contradicting information out there; is meat really bad for someone with high colesterel like me? (183, 2 LDL). I also have visceral fat on my abdomen and I am quite fat: 135 kg at 1.74 m. I found this excerpt on one website: “If you have a pre-existing chronic condition, like high blood pressure, high cholesterol, any history of stroke or other cardiovascular diseases, you should definitely NOT try this diet,” Patton says pointedly. “Even if you have digestive issues, this diet can make things worse with all that protein and fat, which takes a lot longer to digest.”
The carnivore diet is high in saturated fats which can cause elevated LDL or bad cholesterol and put you at risk for heart disease. What’s more, many different kinds of processed meats like bacon and some lunch meats are loaded with sodium and have been linked to certain types of cancer. And a diet high in sodium can cause kidney problems and high blood pressure." Thank you, greetings from Romania!
Thanks for both perspectives. Still unconvinced by the plant focused approach.
Would be curious about a video about plant based regenerative agriculture and where the inputs are derived from.
His LDL theory held zero credibility .. sorry
I’m still trying to wrap my head around how anything healthy can be created in a lab / factory .. from China (?).. then transported here to be “ finished “ in another factory .. This is NOT food .. and where are the long term studies that it is even safe for human consumption ?
Good videos … 👌
Sorry, but you lost me at GMO and Monsanto. When I hear those terms thrown in as if they automatically mean "bad", that's big red flag that the person who's speaking is at the very least trying to leverage pre-existing bias in their audience, and probably also lacks the critical thinking skills to understand why GMO/Monsanto isn't necessarily immediately Satanic.
Forget the ornish study, what about Esselstin's study: a way to reverse CAD?
You needed to do a better job of calling out this guys bullshit.
This guy wants to talk about nuance and individuality in diets, then the only thing that matters are results. But these guys aren't experimenting on themselves or trying a myriad of diets. They stick in one camp and push an egenda. Hypocrisy of the highest order.
I started cutting baked goods by continuing to read the ingredients: the gums and the carrageenan… No more cakes and cookies. Bread is next. Pasta — cut out months ago. It’s a long journey 😯
Any pathways to nutrition that are detours from the most simple and obvious choices of the bygone era are only pretense at improvement. And flaunting the “morality” and “environment protection” in eating vegan or plant-based is a contrived B.S. of people who evolved from a society of abundance, did not know startvation or food insecurity.
The ugliest aspect of fake meat is this: why push for fake “meat” made from soy? — just a thought of eating meat should be foreign and sickening to vegans. Why would they appreciate and enjoy the taste of meat.
It sounds like an interesting film. But if I were a vegan, why in the world would I buy and support the other diets that I would find bad, by buying such a film? I doubt that it will reach a lot of people, but I hope the message spreads.
I remember dutifully eating pounds of raw broccoli thinking it would cure my gut issues, as it painfully ripped through my intestines one day I had an epiphany.
I am plant based 95%. If everyone ate meat, dairy and eggs like I do, those industries would be bankrupt. The real problem is that people are turning diet into a religion. I am not “pure” enough to be a vegan even though I eat and drink almost entirely plant based whole foods. Vegan gawd is not going to hand you a halo or slap horns on you if you drink or not drink a glass of goat milk or sliver of fish. The number of people turned off from doing the good because they are not willing to be perfect astounds me.
Carbon dioxide does not stay in the atmosphere for thousands of years. Trees absorb pollution from fossil fuels and volcanoes. God made the earth self cleaning.
I don't know how to even begin to assemble vegetables that provide as much nutrition as an egg and a cheeseburger.
Those two foods provide most of what we need daily, plus occasional canned fish and some sort of liver source (like pate) = full nutrition.
If you hate red meat, then just eat more eggs and cheese.
What would you have to eat to get the same nutrition from plants??? The mind boggles.
Supplements did nothing for me. The plants I ate during my over 25 vegan years stops any or most nutrients from any plant. Plants are not trying to keep you alive. Sorry people. I’m living proof. Your iron and calcium will tank.
I hear that vegans fart more methane than carnivores. Same for animals. Maybe I am incorrect.
Even though grass-fed grass-finished beef is the gold standard for beef, all beef cattle spend the majority of their short lives on grass before heading to the CAFO for finishing on grain and processing, I believe. The same cannot be said for pork, unfortunately. Pigs can spend their whole lives confined, eating grain.
Great video!
My mother dislikes animals but she is 100% plant based and reversing aging and gradually getting off all medications. Her doctor is impressed.
The problem isn't that companies make money by selling food. The problem is businesses get the government to pass regulations and misleading guidelines that favor their products.
If the average intake of meat is 2oz per day in America then isn’t the majority of Americans already on pretty much a vegetarian diet? Doesn’t look like it’s working very well to me when I look around and am surrounded by unhealthy people. Meat heals and doesn’t destroy massive swaths of land and endless life forms.
Beyond impossible isnt available in Canada 😭
Regarding B12, plant-based diet advocates generally argue that B12 is created by bacteria in our soil, and that nowadays there isn’t as much bacteria as before because of modern farming practices. Is that BS?
Just got back my 6 month blood labs and was disappointing in some things one my uric acid was high, 8.1 and my urea nitrogen bun was high 20 snd my bun creatine was high 21.9 both indicate impaired kidney function probably all high because my high protein diet. Still have low vit D and folate eating greens and walking without a shirt in the sun 3-4 days a week. The good news im no longer pre diabetic was hoping for an A1C that more closely matched my meter average around 90 but it was 5.4. My c peptide was good at 2.1 snd my HDL/Trig ratio 131/59 was 2.2, c reactive protein 0.5. So no eating mostly or only meat is not a miracle diet and i would recommend if you are reading this get your labs done and watch your kidney function and uric acid.
Vague, Vague, Vague is all I got from this guy, Simon. He said a lot of nothing. At least with Vinnie you know exactly where he stands, so I'd be more apt to trust him.
It’s pure propaganda
vegansim is an unhealthy diet… as an acupuncturist of 40 years, the vegans I see are cold, damp, qi deficient and addicted to sugar… plus, their "their elitist judgmental attitude is toxic. Its the diet of young white elitists who can afford the luxury of spending money on a diet that is crap… Its the same with people who are extreme carnivores…. BALANCE is the key here
I think our physiologies vary a lot between individuals. Sugary and starchy carbs was my Achillies heel: pastries, waffles, cereals, candies, sodas and fruit juices made me feel terrible. But I don't have much of a negative reaction to plants (but others do). I also quit rice and bread because they are low nutrition foods and do nothing for my palate. I feel like I'm at my best when I eat 50% vegetables and 50% animal products (by mass).
I was vegan for 5 years. I went vegan for ethical reasons and followed a wfpb diet for about 80%. I ate tons of carbs and near the end fell into that low fat group. Three years into it I really started to notice my health issues. I was slowly getting mental health problems, skin issues, constantly aching, emotional mess, weight problems, digestive issues, allergies to things I’ve never had issues with… doctors didn’t find anything really wrong with me but I felt awful. So I got put on depression and anxiety meds and was told to follow a low fodmap diet. The month before I stopped being vegan, last August, I was basically eating bread because it was the only thing that didn’t seem to upset my stomach. I’m now off meds, all my issues are gone by eating a heavy animal based diet. I’m playing with the idea of completely resetting my body with carnivore but… I just haven’t done it. The only time I feel off is when I eat carbs and certain veggies…
I really like that you, Dr. Scher, offer different viewpoints on contentious questions.
It seems to me that much of the zealotry is based on the totally erroneous notion that there is a universal human with a single metabolic makeup and that the diet that the zealot thrives on must be the whole diet for the whole of humanity! Why is it so hard to accept that dietary suitability follows every other characteristic of living things – that there is a standard normal distribution (Bell) curve?
Still a vegetarian 51 years, now 70, healthy happy, and never a desire to change, I can't imagine the pain animals undergo, I really appreciate your balanced approach to interviewing
Vegan diet wrecked my health. Our physiology does not care about our philosophy.
Ok folk, Simon Hill said “ How are we going to produce enough protein for the growing population?” I don’t think we are in “ protein crisis yet “ we might have to pay a little more. And may I rephrase what he said? Where does he get this information from? Is it reliable? Is it trust worthy? Should I end up believing him because I watch this podcast?
I think a key underappreciated factor is lifestyle. Epigenetics is everything. Gene expression is regulated by internal and external environment. Everyone talks about the optimal diet for humans as if it's a pair of shoes we can all fit into but that mentality comes from our obsession with central planning and centralized control. Life doesn't work that way. What is the most important organ in the body? What is the most important animal on the planet? The most important plant? Is carbon more important than water? Or oxygen? Environment matters. Where you live matters. What your lifestyle is like matters. How much joy and sorrow you deal with matters. Your inner dialog matters. These factors are hard to quantify but have just as much bearing on your health as your dietary tendencies. Healthy living soil produces healthy, nutrient dense plants, which in turn feeds healthy animals, which other animals feed on to maintain health and strength, etc. This is the life cycle. Life feeds on life in an endless cycle of rebirth. Every part is necessary. We need more pastoralists AND we need more agriculturists practicing, refining and moving regenerative and restorative ag forward on a small, local scale. We need more small farms, more small butchers, more small markets, more people on the land! We need more silvopastures and tree cropping. We need more vibrant small towns and communities that people are proud to live in and be part of. The exodus of people from the land and into cities has been a travesty we are now starting to feel the effects of. It seems to me the main diseases affecting the people of the world is myopia and/or oneitis. We are looking too closely at minutiae and getting too fixated on finding that one "truth" or revelation that will make it all make sense and in doing so we forget one of the most important truths of all, one we all knew as a child. Life is magical! To be alive is an ongoing miracle and tremendous gift.
Veganism only makes up 5% of the population including vegetarians. Why are people so upset and down on such a small part of population who just figured out that you don’t have to eat animals to live a healthy lifestyle. Vegan junk food aside it’s a pretty healthy diet if you’re not shoveling tons of processed food like products in your pie hole… give pees a chance!
Being a vegan is a first-world luxury – the supplement necessity makes it impossible for the majority of the world population
How does veganism wind up in a discussion about nutrition? They are unrelated.
There is nothing about veganism that is based on real nutrition or even science in general.
It's all just woo-woo emotional nonsense based on a set of assumptions that are not even close to true.
In regards to LDL, new studys are showing that high LDL is not so important as is the levels of triglycerides to HDL. In fact Dr Paul Mason talks about some populations with higher LDL, HDLs and low triglycerides have longer healther life spans with healther brain and memory functions. So it is appearing that LDL is not the Bad guy but triglycerides are and triglycerides are raised by high sugar carb and excessive PUFAs and insulin resistance according to Dr Paul Mason and Dr Lustig among others.
