Making history! On May 12th, 2022, Prakriti Varshney became the first vegan Indian woman to conquer Mount Everest.
Varshney began at the Everest Base Camp on May 7th with an expedition team and reached the peak in just five days. Mount Everest is Earth’s highest mountain above sea level. Varshney climbed a total of 69 kilometers or a little over 42 miles through the ice, snow, and avalanches.
The low atmospheric pressure is a huge challenge for climbers but Varshney overcame it all and made it to the summit with an Indian flag and vegan mittens.
Varshney went vegan in September 2018 after being vegetarian her whole life.
“And it nearly took me about a month to completely cut-down all the dairy products from my diet. Not only a vegan diet but, I also refrain to use any product that has animal cruelty involved,” she said in a blog post.
Varshney decided to go vegan because she did not want to support animal cruelty.
“So Killing of an animal is and never was a right thing according to me, for human consumption in any manner.”
Last year, Varshney became the second Indian woman to climb Mount Ama Dablam, in Nepal which is known to be one of the more challenging mountains in the world.

This success was what motivated her to conquer Everest. She began a campaign to raise funding for her climb and noted that veganism was the driving force in her life. She said that completing the climb would help crush the myth that vegans are not strong and capable and she did just that!
