Plant-based diets are growing in popularity and restaurants are taking notice.As Maryland Vegan Restaurant Month approaches, restaurants in Baltimore are spotlighting plant-based dishes.Samantha Claassen, owner of Golden West Café in Hampden, is excited about vegan dining. Whether it’s the fried coconut vegan shrimp platter, the vegan tuna wrap or a grilled pineapple arugula salad, you’ll find it all at Golden West Café.”The way the market is now, anything you can eat, we can eat vegan — and it’s really good,” Claassen said.Claassen opened her restaurant in 1997 and serves vegan and meat options, but her love of the plant-based diet lifestyle is why she started Vegan Week in 2012. This year, it’s Vegan Month. “We did a vegan week and were really shocked by the turnout and the response was huge. We were like, ‘Wow, there’s all these people that, you know, it’s an underserved market. These folks are hungry, and this is fun, so like let’s just do this,'” Claassen said. Restaurants all over the state are participating by offering specials beginning Friday through Aug. 28. Claassen said the event has grown in popularity so much that now even non-vegan restaurants join in with special menus.”We want everyone to go out, dining with an open mind, but also like a hungry belly, like ready for new experiences.
