A decade-old dining lifeline for Austin’s vegans is shuttering.
Counter Culture owner Sue Davis announced that the restaurant will close at the end of the year.
Before there were cool breweries, sleek Italian restaurants and world-class barbecue spots on East Cesar Chavez Street, there was Counter Culture. Davis opened the casual and comforting vegan restaurant at 2337 E. Cesar Chavez St. in 2012. The restaurant gave diners not only an alternative to meat-centric dining, but also a sense of community.
Davis took to Facebook on Dec. 1 to announce the news.

“I don’t have a clear picture of what the future will hold for Counter Culture,” wrote Davis, who originally opened Counter Culture as a trailer. “The way people eat out has changed. I love Austin wholeheartedly but with the rising costs I’m not sure it’s feasible to rent again, and buying seems like a faraway dream.”
Counter Culture has reduced its hours for its final weeks and will be open 5 to 10 p.m. Monday-Wednesday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Thursday-Sunday.
