We all know by now that sometimes actors have to go above and beyond for their craft, and for Jenna Ortega this meant giving up veganism.
The Wednesday star, 20, explained that she was forced to give it up when she was in Romania filming the now-hit Netflix show.
She made the revelation as part of a Peeky’s short where she answered the question: “Is Jenna Ortega vegan?”
“I was vegan for a really long time,” she explained. “But I stopped being vegan when I went to Romania to shoot Wednesday actually because the food is very different there.
“And I don’t think that I was meeting my nutrient requirements so I started eating fish again.
“So I’m currently pescatarian.”
This prompted quite the discussion about veganism on YouTube, where the video has been viewed over a million times.
Reacting to the actress’s decision to start eating fish again, one viewer speculated: “She probably accidentally got deficient in something and a doctor recommended she add fish back into her diet to fix it, that’s what usually happens.
“Could be done without fish but it’s the easiest way to fix the deficiency. Glad she’s ok, deficiencies can be scary depending what it was, and she was away from home.”
A Romanian viewer explained that they were not surprised that the actress struggled to be vegan in the country because of the high meat content in their food.
They explained: “Romanian here!!! And as I know, we’re pretty much ‘gourmet’ really. Like most of our traditional dishes are prepared based on meat so, being vegan in Romania is not impossible, but still really hard to achieve.”
“As long as she’s healthy and happy,” remarked a third while a fourth added: “I live in romania and when I watched the movie i recognized the castel where is the school [sic].”
“This is actually smart because your body needs different nutrients,” observed a fifth.
As reported by Healthline, there are a number of nutrients that people can’t get from plants, which is why it’s so important for vegans and vegetarians to make sure they are getting all of their requirements elsewhere.
For some people, this involves taking supplements like B12.
And while Ortega might not currently be vegan, the numbers of people adopting plant-based diets are only on the increase, with The Vou reporting that 14 percent of the world’s population is now vegan or vegetarian.
