My best tips for eating on a budget.
1. Look at sales and plan your meals around items that are on sale, if possible.
2. frozen fruit and vegetables can sometimes, depending where you live, be cheaper than fresh
3. canned fish
4. Frozen fish
5. buy plain oats and customize them yourself instead of buying the prepackaged flavored varieties.
6. Eat your leftovers or make smaller portions. wasting food is wasting money
7. If you have the storage space, buy in bulk/family packages and separate into portions, especially meat when it's on sale
8. buy dry beans and lentils and cook it yourself. It takes a little time and planning but can save you money in the longrun.
9. make your own sweets/treats/desserts
10. Invest in storage containers that can go from the freezer into the microwave and/or the oven. Just remember glass dishes from the fridge or freezer either go into a cold oven or need to be left out to warm to room temperature before going into a hot oven or you will break the glass dish.
11. Invest in some popsicle molds and a blender. Make yourself a smoothie to use up fruit before it goes bad and freeze the left overs in the popsicle molds and then you have a frozen treat for another day. You can also use an ice cube tray.
12. Put left over coffee or tea into ice cube trays and freeze. Next time you want an iced coffee or tea, pop a few into the hot drink and voila. Or you can use them to blend up a fancy coffee drink.
13. don't be afraid to try a new ingredient, food or recipe.
14. Look at recipes and customize them to your tastes. I can't tolerate anything spicy, so if I see a recipe that gets my interest but it calls for spices or chili peppers, I either use less, or just leave it out. It might not taste the exact same but it's still good and I won't be suffering with heartburn afterwards.
