Here are the top stories today in Beaverton:
- The Afghan crisis hits close to home for many Beaverton residents, including Mayor Beaty. A former combat veteran herself, Beaty says she’s determined to use her office as a resource to aid veterans and civilians affected by the recent events. The mayor also committed to welcoming potential Afghan refugees to the city. (Pamplin Media Group)
- Washington County Sheriff’s Office reports that a man was arrested after a 30-hour standoff in Northeast Hillsboro. Family members requested a welfare check on Ian Tunger, 55, on August 20. Mental health workers responded to his residence but called police after Tunger reportedly fired gunshots at them. Tunger fired on officers as well, and the state’s Tactical Negotiations Team (TNT) and Crisis Negotiations Unit (CNU) came to offer additional assistance. Tunger was taken into custody Saturday afternoon. (Washington County Sheriff’s Office)
- Beaverton Startup Challenge 2022 is open for applications, reports Malia Spencer. The program awards five startups $25,000 investment and incubation services from the Oregon Technology Business Center (OTBC). The program started in 2016 and since then has awarded more than $40 million to companies in the early stages of growth. (Portland Business Journal, subscription required)
- A golden retriever escaped a watery doom with help from rescue workers in Aloha on Monday. Calvin, a 12-year-old canine, fell into an abandoned well and was stuck for hours before TVF&R firefighters came to his aid. He was later reunited with his owners and is now recovering at home. (KPTV)
