Vegan food isn’t just vegetables and bland tofu. As plant-based diets become more popular, vegan menus get bigger and more creative.
Sure, you’ll find healthful green salads, grain bowls, juices and veggie burgers nearly everywhere. But chefs have also found ways to craft vegan versions of traditional comfort foods, swapping animal products for plant-based ingredients. Think nut-based cheeses, Southern fried “chicken” sandwiches with seitan standing in for the bird, and decadent chocolate desserts with avocado instead of cream or butter.
With World Vegan Day approaching on Nov. 1, we’ve highlighted some of Connecticut’s vegan restaurants and food trucks, where you may not even miss the meat or dairy.

The “Feisty Monkey” whole-grain pasta with spicy peanut and cilantro sauce is a best-seller on the truck, as is a housemade black bean chipotle burger with sweet potato fries and hickory-smoked ketchup.
