An outspoken farmer was banned from TikTok for harassing and bullying vegans. The farmer, Gareth Wyn Jones, responded to videos promoting the vegan diet with his own clips promoting the livestock industry.

Wyn Jones, who has 15,000 followers on the platform, claimed that he was a victim of vegan backlash by powerful campaign groups. The farmer spliced together a video of himself holding a turnip with another video promoting veganism and said, “I’ll tell you why I’m not a vegan and never will be – because I’m a farmer.”
TikTok says he is guilty of harassment and bullying, but within 24 hours, the ban had been rescinded. This came 16 months after another one of his run-ins with TikTok, where he showed a video of a dead pheasant that he was preparing to eat. He was found guilty of violent and graphic content but appealed and was quickly allowed back on the platform.
Vegans and farmers have a long history of feuds, and the sides are often never able to see eye to eye. Many of Wyn Jones’ followers on TikTok claimed that TikTok did not support the people who “feed the nation.” In reality, we could eliminate world hunger and feed so many more people if we freed up the land we use to produce livestock and use it to grow whole foods for the world’s population. A meat diet can not sustain the growing population.
If we want to be able to show the world how veganism can save health, the planet, and billions of animals, we need to be able to communicate effectively. Throwing hate back and forth does no good for either side. I’m sure we’ve all had a friend or family member who is so against the idea of giving up animal products, and it can be hard when someone you love does not want to see your side or look at the facts. Hate is never going to be the answer to solving these problems, and we need to communicate calmly and effectively.
