📢 Fireworks Poll!
Fireworks are illegal in Long Beach. If the police are called, you may have to pay as much as $20,000 in response costs plus citation fines of $1,000. How do you feel about that? Please let me know your thoughts! (As of today, 14% don’t want fireworks, 75.1% want “safe and sane fireworks,” and 0.5% don’t care one way or the other while another 10.4% want to buy what they choose.)
Here are the top stories today in Long Beach:
- If you received a Meals on Wheels delivery between May 23 and June 13, you may have been exposed to hepatitis A. We learned on Thursday that “the incident stemmed from a volunteer who was helping package food.” If you were notified of possible exposure, get your hepatitis A vaccine and check for symptoms, “which include diarrhea, stomach pain, dark-colored urine, fever, jaundice, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite and muscle pain.” (LB Post)
- A vegan butcher shop? Yes! The Plant Butchers will open later this ear at 500 West Broadway. There will be plenty of vegan staples as well as ready-made sandwiches. (VegOut)
- The Big Bang On The Bay is a go on July 4, but some environmentalists aren’t happy. “The Sierra Club Los Cerritos Wetlands Task Force persuaded the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board to issue an order requiring water quality tests and reports.” They point to a nearby “rookery containing Herons, Egrets and Gulls.” “They always come back,” the fireworks’ organizer says. You may remember that we talked about the elegant tern rescue that happened last year after about 2,000 chicks were scared off their roosting platforms in early July. (Press-Telegram, Patch)
- Netflix finished filming in Long Beach on Friday. You may have noticed the crews around “the bluff west of the Belmont Pier at 20 37th Place” and Club Ripples, at 5101 East Ocean. It was for the miniseries “Griselda,” which followed the life of “Griselda Blanco Restrepo, the real-life Colombian businesswoman and cocaine boss of the Medellin drug cartel in the 1980s through the early 2000s.” (The HiLo)
- Mark your calendars! July 4th is almost here, and the City plans to celebrate. On July 2, there will be the Independence Day Dog Parade at Lincoln Park. On July 3, you can attend the Big Bang On The Bay. And on the fourth, there are the Great American Kids’ Bike Parade and the Fireworks At The Waterfront. (Patch)
