Norfolk, Va. – The results are in for PETA’s 2022 list of the Top 10 Vegan-Friendly Beach Towns in the U.S., and the winners, some of which are highlighted below, have splashed down on the shores of the Atlantic, the Pacific, the Gulf of Mexico, and even Lake Michigan:
- Charleston, South Carolina, where diners rave about Mama Lucia’s Savory Cornbread Waffles topped with Besto Pesto at the Café of Sweet Abundance, crispy golden cauliflower Vings dipped in a sauce of your choice at Vined, and the comforting Grits & Greens bowl topped with tomato, mushrooms, kale, onion, Sea Island red peas, corn, jalapeño, and cilantro lime at Gathering Cafe.
- San Diego, California, a foodie’s paradise, with vegan festivals that include the International Vegan Film Festival and Dinner, the Encinitas Vegan Food Popup, and the Reggae Vegan Fest. Standout eateries include Rollin Roots, whose blackened “shrimp” and fried oyster mushroom po’boys are so popular that the food truck business has grown to include a brick-and-mortar restaurant. And promising a vegan Japanese experience, The Yasai serves a colorful vegetable Nigiri platter, an Omakase Bento Box, and the Hanzo Sword roll made with fermented eryngii mushroom, “no-shrimp,” and truffle aioli.
- West Palm Beach, Florida, home to Darbster bistro’s waterfront views, foliage-blanketed patio, and menu of vegan delights—including roasted beet tartare, crispy hearts of palm cakes dressed in spicy caper remoulade, and pan-seared Chinese eggplant scallops drizzled in a sweet miso sake sauce. In the heart of downtown, the ultra-modern PLANTA dazzles guests with dishes from Coconut Ceviche to “chicken”-fried mushroom Bao Sliders.
“Whether it’s the Ahi Watermelon Nigiri at PLANTA in West Palm Beach or the tasty treats at San Diego’s vegan festivals, it’s as easy as tofu cream pie for beach-going foodies to eat kindly,” says PETA President Ingrid Newkirk. “All the beach towns on PETA’s list are hot spots for the animal-friendly fare people are craving this summer.”
Must-try dishes in PETA’s other winning cities include the Spicy Barbecue Jackfruit Arepa at Earthly Cafe in Atlantic City, New Jersey; the Lemon Bundt Cake Slice with lemon buttercream frosting and candied lemon at EATcetera in Galveston, Texas; the Chocolate Quinoa Breakfast Bowl topped with toasted coconut and dark chocolate drizzle at Anna’s House in Grand Haven, Michigan; Almond Ricotta Toast at Fermento in Long Beach, New York; “sausage” Vegan Aussie Rolls at Roots & Leaves in Nags Head, North Carolina; the crispy, limited-run Blutos “Chickun” Sandwhich at Sprout and Lentil in Newport, Rhode Island; and the Peanut Stew with sweet potatoes and collard greens at Veg on the Edge in Santa Cruz, California.
Each winning town’s mayor will receive an award certificate from PETA, whose motto reads, in part, that “animals are not ours to eat” and which opposes speciesism, a human-supremacist worldview. For more information, please visit PETA.org or follow the group on Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram.
