I took your bench advice, about holding it for one second at my chest before exploding up, on flat and incline bench, and my chest has never felt this sore in over 5 years..fucking amazing.

Hi Jason! Lets say i dont have acces to a bench press and im doing push ups in order to build up enough strength to be able to do dips. Would using push up handles in order to get a greater range of motion help prevent the risk of pec tear when doing deep dips?
I've overlooked this advice for a long time, and all that Jason is saying is very correct. The best example of tightness on the bench is Larry Wheels, who benches 620 but controls the weight so well that the bar just grazes his chest and doesn't sink in. If you are not used to benching tightly it takes a long while to learn and build up strength but it is very much worth it in the end.
I used to hate Blaha but now have a lot of respect for him. He does talk a lot of sense at times.

dips are a bullshit non-functional exercise, with a very high risk of acute and long term injuries, what human activity is similar to dips? getting off the ground, which is done once in awhile, and one rep, not designed to weight or push to failure or high rep
Better advice- don't do barbell bench press! Unless you are an Olympic lifter, there is NO need to do it. Dumbbells are much safer and more effective for pec development.
