I had this almost exact conversation with a patient today. She wasn't there to discuss her weight, but other things. She was just so happy that she wasn't feeling judged and spoke up about the last MD that saw her for an issue. She left their office crying because she was accused of not eating healthy food (she was) and being a bad Mom as a result of her size.
As you said, the lack of context is huge. "False standard of health"?!?!? Since when are donuts healthy? Absent context, people will watch this video and think donuts are ok without understanding the impact in insulin resistance, accumulation of visceral fat, and the potential for type 2 diabetes. The video sends the message that all food has health benefits and that if we think otherwise, we're "phobic". But then it switches the message from "if you think there are unhealthy foods, you're phobic and oppressive" to "rewarding yourself with food is bad" and "vegetables are a punishment." This will be interpreted by the "Tide-Pod eaters" as "vegetables are equal to cupcakes and you can't tell me otherwise." Very few foods are neutral. They are on a spectrum with foods that are empty calories and provide no nutrition on one end and nutritious, calorie dense, low-on-the-glycemic-index foods on the other end.
What do "body positive" people usually say? That just because they're fat, it doesn't mean they don't eat healthy. Yet what food do they open with? Donuts. 🤣
In the end they can blame metabolism, disease, genetics, etc..But the reality is that the average fat person just wants a license to eat poorly and not feel shame about it. 💯
I put my food decisions into poor or better categories. Eating a whole pizza…poor. enjoying 1-2 slices and then a salad…better. I eat what I want but adjust portion size based on calorie content. I enjoy a slice of really good cheesecake every week. I'm still steadily loosing weight.
I'm going to go on a limb here and say it's not just what they said in this video but also what they show: an apparently obese woman telling us what foods are "bad" for us. That too is context.
THIS STATEMENT APPLIES TO THOSE OBESE,OR DEALING WITH HEALTH ISSUES FROM EXCESSIVE WEIGHT .ONLY A FOOL DOES NOT BELIEVE THERE ARE SPECIFIC FOODS, OR METHODS OF COOKING THAT ARE NOT BAD FOR YOU, JUST AS SMOKING IS NOT ADVANTAGEOUS.IT IS TOTALLY ACCEPTABLE TO JUDGE PEOPLE WHEN THEY SHOW DISREGARD FOR THE GIFT OF A LIFE,AN AMAZING BODY ,AND THAT WHEN PEOPLE EAT "OFTEN" UNHEATHY FOODS LEADING TO OBESITY IS AN OFFENSE TO THE BLESSING OF HEALTH AND LIFE.TO OCCASIONALLY EAT FOOD NOT IDEAL IS OK AND REASONABLE, HOWEVER TO CONSISTENTLY EAT CRAP IS INEXCUSABLE WITH THE SCIENTIFIC KNOWLEDGE THAT EXISTS IN THIS ERA.
Personally, I just use the 80/20 rule; if 8 times of 10 my diet is well-balanced and calorically appropriate, then the other two times I can treat myself – it's about all balance and personal accountability.
The only people who will be negatively impacted by the doughnut video are those who are ignorant and or gullible. As Lane said, live and let live. If you want to eat a plate full of doughnuts then knock yourself out! If you want to lose weight then have at it. Live your own life!
In case the scam wasn't obvious to you, that video was bought and paid for by the food industry and the souls and integrity of the people in the video are for sale. The "black nutritionist" is actually a Craft Foods employee who gets paid for misleading people who identify with her. It's a corporate misinformation campaign.
I am 51. When I was growing up, it was pretty rare to see over weight kids. Now a days, i see obese kids all over the place. It’s a shame because many of these kids are going to have health issues for the rest of their lives.
I don't like fat acceptance, but most weight lifters neglect cardio for health reasons. Health is a lot of things. You need to do yoga to be healthy, but most of you don't do yoga and most of you get your info from social media when it comes to barbells instead off books.
The biggest concern of this video needs to be the fact that one of the women is a senior food scientist for Mondolez. Which is Kraft foods. There is a MASSIVE financial interest in Kraft promoting this message. And if you look up Dr Kera, her job is literally promoting food science associated with the brand. Breaking Points covered this a while back, it should terrify people that big companies are able to so easily hijack this type of messaging.
Dr Kera has a PhD in nutrition. Someone on their video pointed out the potential conflict of interest, they basically got called racist for asking.
You can have a libertarian viewpoint on people eating whatever they want, as long as it doesn’t impact your life. Match that up with nurses having the 2nd highest rate of back injury, because of having to move overweight patients. My weight problems would affect the nurse, my choices stop impacting just me.
Usually, you are stricter when it comes to misinformation.
What exactly makes you think these people didn't mean exactly what they said?
Did you ever depict Dr. Fung as someone who has to just sell his message better so that he isn't misunderstood?
These body positivity folks do mean it quite literally – criticism of food choices is not welcome, with no regard to the context. Also calorie counting or any form of food intake control, fitness in general… It's all toxic, it's all part of the problem.
This stuff is connected to "healthy at every size", "obesity is a myth" and all sorts of other bs ideas that lately fester in people's minds.
So next time, even if you might invite some canceling action, even if you might be called names, even if one of your videos might be demonitized – maybe stick to your principles anyway.
We are so terrified of offence that we are now promoting obesity in the same way Hollywood used to promote smoking. Don’t fat shame people but also don’t tell them obesity is a healthy lifestyle choice either. If you want to pretend to be offended by this I don’t care.
You need a challenge. We need a peer review/what the fitness of dr mcdougall, dr esselstyn, dr mcgregor. These guys are using science and research saying plant based diet is the only way to eat. The protocols are pretty extreme to most people, if not all. The claims are amazing if true.

How about, eat in a way that you show care for yourself ? Plain and simple approach. Get rid of all of that woke sht.
Now, how is cheering morbidly obese people to continue eating themselves to death, care for them ?
Triglycerides
Everyone in that video was fat
Unless you are my loved one, friend, or relative, I will not care a pin if you want to die prematurely. It is your life. You do you.

I bet the processed food industry loves body positivity
Hey man that heroin addiction is really sending you down a bad path i want you to stop.
STOP SHAMING ME FOR MY CHOICES IM ALL ABOUT HEROIN POSITIVITY

most importantly, that lady apparently works for Nabisco or something.
Personally, I just use the 80/20 rule; if 8 times of 10 my diet is well-balanced and calorically appropriate, then the other two times I can treat myself – it's about all balance and personal accountability.
What's next? Alcoholics telling us there are no good or bad beverages, drink whatever you want? 😂

What the fitness -> what the woke

This sounded like an educational video much more than what the fitness video haha.

The nutritionist in the video works for Mondelez, the company that makes Chips Ahoy, Oreos, Cadbury chocolates and many other junk foods.
Based and Libertarian pilled
You can tell that Layne cares
Yes. It has.
woke culture is insane. They see everything through the lens of oppression. eating to the point of being morbidly obese is unhealthy.
👍
fun fact: it does not matter how far body positivity or other pc stuff goes once you reduce your internet intake lmao
Again the nuance👌👌🙏🙏
well said!

These people should have said calories in calories out.
4 d donut 🍩 , & artificial sweetners
When someone unironically calls eating vegetables a "punishment", I know not to take them seriously from that point onwards.
This is why I love Layne's videos. The smarts and common sense never fail. Always an insightful approach to everything.

Call out the bs no matter whom it's coming from.
