📰 Here are the top stories today in Los Angeles:
- A structure fire in the 2800 block of West 7th Street led to a Los Angeles Fire Department (LAFD) response and the arrest of a male adult. The call came in Thursday after 5 p.m. The two-story building is zoned for commercial units on the first floor and residential units on the second floor. Intense heat and flames called for vertical ventilation. After almost an hour, 110 firefighters put out the fire and “preserved portions of the businesses on the 1st floor and defended adjacent structures from any damage.” The Red Cross assisted ten people whom the fire displaced. - Earlier that same day, the LAFD Hazardous Materials Squad responded to reports of an explosion at 923 Bloom Walk, a USC Science building. One person was injured and the building evacuated. The LAFD found no fire hazard, worrisome air readings, or any type of leakage. Occupants were allowed back into the building. There’s no word on the chemicals that caused the explosion. (LAFD)
- We’re number 15 . . in a ranking of the nation’s dirtiest cities. We’re not as bad as San Bernardino (#3) but a long way away from nearby Long Beach, which came in at #43. Contributing score factors are air pollution, landfill waste, homeless populations, and rat populations. (Patch)
- Burgerlords at 110 North Avenue 56 went all vegan some three years ago. On Friday, we learned that this decision cost the eatery 50% of its business. Therefore, meat and dairy are back on the menu. “It’s no longer sustainable for us to operate as a 100 percent vegan restaurant,” the owner explained. If you love The Oinkster at 2005 Colorado Boulevard, which is owned by the same family, you’re going to love the pivot. (LA Eater)
- Coffee-inspired whisky? Yes, please! For anyone having this reaction, here’s a pop-up to note at The Carrera Café at 8251 Melrose Avenue. Called the Macallan Harmony Collection, you can find it today, Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Guests find “complimentary treats . . . (as well as) custom coffee and cocktails, branded lattes, food pairings, and tastings of the new limited edition whisky.” (Patch)

🛑 Consumer Product Recalls 🛑
Lead, undeclared allergens, and . . . foreign objects in food? Here are some of the latest consumer product recalls we ran across.
- ZLINE 30-inch, 36-inch and 48-inch RG gas ranges (1-26-23). Operating the oven may lead to dangerous emissions of carbon monoxide.
- Almondy’s chocolate cake with Daim (1-25-23). There was a metal object in a cake. These were sold through IKEA.
- Mercedes-Benz’ 2001-2011 C-Class, CLK, E-Class, and CLS vehicles. There’s a chance that the glass sunroof panel isn’t fastened correctly. The manufacturer will also send out letters on February 21.
Now you’re in the loop and ready to head out the door on this Saturday. I’ll see you soon!
