‘I’m turning vegan!’ Video of freshly cut meat SPASMING leaves Twitter horrified (but there’s a fascinating explanation)
A warning to all carnivores: this uncomfortable video of a freshly cut piece of meat may just make you rethink your dietary choices.
Earlier this week, the Twitter account Weird and Terrifying posted a clip of a slab of meat erupting into spasms.
The video – which went viral on Facebook in 2020 – shows what happens when butchers add salt to fresh meat.
This crucial step not only draws out the water from the surface but it also helps preserve it in the long-run.
Gfycat user Jackson, from the US, shared this video in 2020 of a butcher handling a spasming piece of freshly cut meat which had been slathered in salt
But as Reddit user Jackson, from the US, pointed out, it has a pretty unpleasant side effect.
In the viral video, the anonymous butcher holds the meat up to the camera so viewers can get a better angle of it as it spasms.
The surface of the meat almost appears to bubble as it reacts to having recently been slathered in salt.
Experts have previously said this only happens with the freshest meat and the pulsations are caused by the animal’s nerve endings, which are ‘still alive’, reacting to the salt.

In 2015, a similar video of a slap of meat pulsating as it hung from a hook in a market in the Philippines went viral.
Lv Suwen, an expert at the local animal health department said at the time: ‘You can rest assured, this piece of meat is very fresh and is from a freshly slaughtered animal.
‘The central nervous system is dead but the nerve-endings in the muscles are still firing resulting in the jumping, because the nerves are not yet dead. This will stop after a short time.’
In response to Jackson’s video being shared on Twitter, one user wrote: ‘I could have done without this knowledge…’
Another added: ‘Well, this could make me give up eating meat.’
‘Planning a vegetarian diet from now on, a third wrote. ‘That’s horrible!’
Jackson’s video has since been shared on TikTok, where another viewer claimed: ‘I’m going vegan.’
Meanwhile, one disturbed user said: ‘My skin is crawling… so unsettling.’
