Love and thriving on a vegan diet.
Garden of Eden was intended to be plant based. The end. š
Mediterranean diet guys!
Great episode. I think the whole point of being vegan, in my opinion, is to minimize the suffering of others the best that I can. We all know nobody is perfect. The whole point isn't to be 100% zero waste, or 100% vegan or 100% cruelty free. You just do the best that you can! I understand bugs get squashed by trucks carrying food, that rodents get caught up in the farm equipment when harvesting food, but that still happens for people that eat meat, they just have the added on deaths of the larger animals (who are even closer to humans). If you believe that animals should be treated nicely and that you want to reduce harm to others you aren't living according to your morals if you are just going to eat McDonalds every day or buy the cheap meat in the frozen section of the supermarket. Also good to note the difference between being plant-based and vegan; the former is the diet and the latter is more of a lifestyle that seeps into the goods that you buy and the ethics you follow.
Diets really have nothing to do with minimalism. Someone could live on only peas and call it minimalist, but there would be zero logic. It's just silly. Most vegans are vegan for the sake of animal rights and the planet. Some (very few) are devout Buddhists. It's a choice and not a diet. Weird topic, IMHO.
The focus of this is the Health Science.
Evolutionarily we are omnivores. We require certain vitamins (b12) to function that can only be found in animal products.
Of course because of modern science, vegans can take a supplement for this. However, vegans cannot say that we as humans are MEANT to be vegan. Itās a choice and nothing else.
You need to have Rich Roll with him battling out the argument, for and against and who looks the healthiest š¤
Veganism, from a guilt and suffering standpoint, is about as minimalist as it's possible to be.
I don't see how anyone who doesn't eat animals and animal products could have animal blood on their hands. It doesn't make sense.
I've been a fan of The Minimalists for years and want to thank you guys for showing me the way to a minimalist lifestyle.
I don't think having a vegan of ominivorous diet is more or less healthy than the other. You can easily eat an unhealthy vegan diet, and a healthy omnivorous diet, or vice versa. However, it is disappointing to hear very flawed logic about the ethical reasons why people choose a vegan lifestyle. Seemingly everyone agrees factory farming is wrong, despite an overwhelming majority of people continuing to purchase meat farmed this way. Max talks about voting with your dollars, but offers no insight on how to avoid buying factory farmed meat. With its prevelance on the market, over 90% of meat in the USA is factory farmed, surely it would be good to advise people how to avoid this meat, and their approach when they go to restaurants and assess whether the meat they are eating is the marginal fraction they would agree is acceptable (I would obviously argue against this tiny fraction, but I'll leave that for now).
It's ironic that Max talks about the ostrich effect, I honestly was this was with consumerism before I found the minimalits. I would buy things in search of happiness, then I realised that was impossible. I completely changed my worldview, and I feel I see the world in a completely different way since realising this. I was also this way when I used to consume animal products, but since challenging my cognitive dissonance, I have realised I don't need to eat those products anymore. So the question is simply if I can live without needlessly causing suffering and killing animals, surely I should? Max finished talking about reducing the suffering under the curve, I agree with him on that on, which is why I chose veganism.
If I could live off of a Vegan diet and feel good and sustained, I would, but I must have meat to feel ok. Just how it has to be. If I don't eat meat before bed I always wake with low blood sugar and can't sleep. Drives me nutty.
So proud of people in the comments defending veganism š»āØš»
You can be a minimalist no matter your diet is. BTW, blue zones people are NOT vegans.
Being grateful for whatever food we eat on our table is the most important thing. Culture & beliefs should be respected.
Most crops are grown for livestock consumption. When you eat meat, you are killing the animal you are directly eating, AND contributing to the death of animals such as field mice during the harvesting of crops.
Veganism isnāt perfect (thereās still suffering involved), but itās the diet that causes the most minimal amount of animal suffering & death and environmental destruction.
It is the most minimal diet.
Fruits, nuts, grains, vegetables, etc. that are all grown on the Earth are designed for us to eat. There is no need to take the life of an animal for hunger and appetite as a human when we have such an abundance of food already. As far as dairy, milk is designed for baby cows, etc. If you really take time to think about it, thereās simply no reason to eat meat or dairy. I also canāt believe this guy said the only reason not to eat meat is that you donāt like it. The best thing you can do to not support the meat and dairy industry is not to buy or eat it. Period.
A plant based diet is the only diet proven to reverse many of our major health issues/diseases including heart disease, fatty liver disease, high blood pressure, some cancers etc etc. Thereās a plethora of information available today but Iād start with The China Study, How Not To Die, and How To Prevent + Reverse Heart Diseaseš
I find that attaching myself to any one specific diet causes an identity crisis for me that's not worth it. For example, if I go plant based for health reasons, I can't escape the guilt of knowing my cosmetics, clothes, shoes, are not also cruelty free. I then end up spiraling into a buying spree of all things cruelty free and vegan, even if they don't work as well as my non cruelty free products that I've been using for years. I wind up with products I don't like or that don't work for my skin and a bunch of pimples, as well as a bunch of stuff I no longer want. This is unfortunately a cycle I go through from time to time and it drives me crazy. I put so much on importance on things that I buy affecting my identity as a person
I do not support the meat or dairy industry. I choose to not eat meat. Simple. It is my spiritual path.
The China Study by T C Campbell. His research found that too much protein turned on cancer.
Time to get rid of factory farming for the sake of the animals and humans. Stop big corporations who own these cruel farms from stealing your money and your health. If you choose to eat meat, buy locally farmed, grass fed, pasture raised animal meat. Support your local farmers.
This guy has good intentions, but he is wrong. People should do the research for themselves and not listen to one person opinion. This guy is extremely biased and it shows.
As one of the members of The Minimalists, I just wanted to hop on here to applaud Maxās perspective. While itās not mainstream, I have personally experienced every diet from vegan to vegetarian to paleo to carnivore. As someone who has suffered from several debilitating health issues, a modified carnivore diet is the only thing that makes me feel good. Vegetables have me laid out for hours, if not, days. Through increasing my meat consumption, I have overcome restless leg syndrome, heart palpitations, anxiety attacks, bloating that made me look six months pregnant, and pernicious anemia, to name a few. I still have stage-four endometriosisāIām not certain diet will change thatābut through my personal experience with this diet my life is infinitely more fulfilling because MY body is getting what it needs to thrive.
If youāre interested in broadening youāre perspective outside of the mainstream narrative, consider checking out the book SACRED COW. If you donāt want to dedicate the time to a book, thereās also a documentary.
Keep your kale.
Meat has healed me.

Along with many other solid opinions already stated here that I won't repeat, I want to poit out that what we eat (it isn't always a diet so I won't call it a diet) is very, very personal for each of us, it's part of a most intimate relationship with our body. If we are attentive and use our intuition we will discover what is best for us in terms of eating (and other aspects of life of course) and often veganism is that correct thing. A discussion about minimalism should not include food, in my opinion. Too personal. I don't even get how one diet could be minimalist; if anything, raw is the most minimalist of all, but nowadays most of us can't eat raw meat, can we? But we can easily eat raw fruit and veggies. Anyways. Leave food out of this… As for junk food, I agree. There is also vegan junk just as much as there is 'traditional' junk AND we would be better off not eating it. The best part is that a lot of vegans explore their options and go for whole foods more and more.
Listening to this I must add my opinion. I'm vegan and have been for years. Why? Because #1. I'm lactose intolerant- any dairy product makes me incredibly nauseous. #2. Same with eggs. #3. I look at eating animals as taking a knife, slashing my dog or cat's throat, skinning it and eating it. Different animal, same idea.
Do I do it for "health"? Nope. I eat junk. My BP runs around 110/70 (or lower with no meds whatsoever), I'm 60, and I smoke. I'm a walking contradiction.
This /claims are ridiculous and typical āargumentsā of omnivore Bullshitbingo, I am shocked you support some of his opinions.
Dunno who' s this invite, but he trapped all of you lot into a very unnuanced monologue. A very sad one. Long before veganism became well known we had the sad privilege to see how it devastated countries like Jamaica to let cattle graze. With almost no water and sparse grass,…trees all cut for…charcoal (bbcues) a big part of the world is unfit for cattlefarming. Soy, as said below is mainly grown for cattlefood and destroys the Amazone. To proof that count like an 8 year old. If 1 out of 10 of world citizens are healthily enjoying a plantbased menu the rest needs meat. So 9 out of 10 people applause the soyproduction.
Anyway, I'm opposed to soy, very un healthy. The rest of the discours is all b…sh… , too long to refer to.
More interesting is the fact that oncologists (specialized in liver, bowel, …) we know…cut out meat and fried foods of their diets.
By applauding a very highly controversial , pollution and lobbied industry for once my favourite utub' buddies seem to take the story from the wrong end.
Yesterday I saw a magnificent Inuit film by a canadian, Deep song Rouge Gorge by Marie Pascale DubƩ. To me it felt totally right they enjoyed a feast around a seal that gave food to many People. The animal was eaten from top to bottom, including bloodsoup, before the transformation of its skin into useful objects. It was hunted and slaughtered by hand by hunters. In a place without any tree for hundred of miles.
Made sense.
Carnivore is the most minimalistic diet on earth.
All of the critters being decapitated and being killed in fields are dying for the food to feed livestock!
Let's make a distinction between Raw Vegans and Oreo Vegans, please. The majority of diet doesn't come with an ingredient label. Fruits and vegetables, folks, and don't cook them to death.
Please, next time at least mention that it is his opinion. There is enough data and research on plants base diet and many doctors supporting it that, what he said "no data", proved his biased. Especially when he is a low-carbohydrate diet advocate.Ā thanks.
āNo dataā šš¤£šš¤£šš¤£
Every person is different, with different choices of what to eat. The point is to live long and be healthy. I'm sticking to being omnivore. š
I want to like you guys so bad, but anytime I listen to you, I find nonsense conversations like this one.
Lol this guy says there's no study to suggest the superiority of plant based eating. I suggest to start reading some books: Michael Greger's for example and then start giving advices
I lived in a Blue Zone..years ago..the one thing I noticed about the locals was their extreme stamina/strength even till old age…the obvious dietary habit was a huge % consumption of raw food ..wild fruits seeds nuts veg. insects lizards seafood & on occasion few monkeys…plus everything else from their garden + home brewed adult beverages. It does not exist anymore.
Another point – most of the corn and soy is actually plant for the factory farm animals consumption. There is a clear statistic about. How much soy bean you have to plant for feeding a cow and how many people you can feed from one tortured cow?
Also show me one farmer who is killing animals a humane way. There is non. No animals wants to die. Just we use other sensible living beings for our own pleasure for centuries it doesnāt mean we should continue to do it forever, right?
And omnivore does NOT mean 50/50! 70% of all species that are omnivores, are specialized towards one or the other. And human stomach acid is stronger than a lion's. We are supposed to eat mostly meat! Ever since humans have started to grow crops, we have cut down trees to make room for agriculture, whereas animals can graze on land, where we can't grow any crops anyway. And cows have been farting and burping on this planet for millions of years, so they are not destroying the ozone layer.
Veganism is not about being healthy but definitely ethical. Itās not using animals for our profit and pleasure. And thatās the point. It hurts me when anyone is bashing veganism because there is no argument to deny that the meat and dairy industry and other animal āproductionā is extremely cruel and inhuman. We can talk about how healthy a diet is only after it doesnāt create unnecessary suffering and death of other living beings. Humankind has to set the priorities a little and not to judge everything according what is better for us. Well vegan lifestyle (itās not a diet actually) can be healthy and you donāt have miss any nutritions if you really focus on what you eat – same like with any other diet or lifestyle.
This video is mislabeled (really just a criticism of veganism).
Also, the content is highly inaccurate, especially with the reference to "no studies."
Every diet ever conceived has been studied, while controlling for other variables, and the results are just a Google search away.
Lastly, this misinformation is presented by someone with neither experience nor relevant credentials in nutrition or medicine.
Just because TV shows bring him on doesn't make him an expert.
Do better, gents.
The key seems to be just balance no matter what you may believe and ones values. Thanks!
Lol, it's none of the aboveš
Carnivore.
