I love that show. Especially the episode where the investigator followed the lady through Mc Donald's drive thru and told the worker "I'll have the same order as the lady in front of me."
I don't see the show as mean. Not only did they sign up for the show but the people say they "barely eat" and mainly eat fruit and veg so they don't why they are overweight.
I remember one woman took a good look at reality and made an effort to change. The show came back 3 months later and she looked great, felt great and lost more weight than her original goal.
I think the worst one was the one where they locked one underweight person & one overweight person in a house together and forced them to swap their jacked-up diets… its pretty jarring 😅
The show is not that helpful and is more likely to cause me to binge eat.
A useful resource for anyone that needs help in this area is "The Bing Eating Prevention Workbook" by Gia Marson and Danielle Keenan Miller.
Awesome video! Very useful tips and optimistic tone are genuinely encouraging. Many thanks for sharing your insights! 😀
I learnt a lot from secret eaters. It was supposed to be tongue in cheek because they kept saying they didnt eat anything when they did
This is such a weird take. Why would you get that the show is about “exposing overweight people as evil deceptive liars”? It’s about showing them that they are lying to THEMSELVES. Overeating and not realizing it is quite an easy thing to do, especially when you’re distracted. Every viewer knows that. And I’m sorry but seeing dietitians talking about “fatphobia” and equating it to simply encouraging someone to maintain a healthy weight (AKA what most dietitians are paid to do), is incredibly cringe.
I don’t really understand the comments saying this helped me lose weight therefore this show was good. Bc it’s working w the assumption that weight loss is this good necessary thing.
I know why I secretly eat. I have a child and sometimes I don't feel like sharing, even if it is caring. 😂
Abbey’s reaction is mostly proof of the enormous cultural gap between the US and the UK. Reading the comments from Europeans here, I think most people see it that way. This is what we call friendly banter, dear Americans! Grow a pair!
Don't listen to the comments coming from another """truth teller nutrionists" fanbase, which are skinny people that hated themselves so much when they were fat and now enjoy spreading hate on fat people believing that "tough love" works for everybody as if it's not what have been done for the last 40 years… And still didn't work knowing people are more obese than ever. I really appreciate your view on this show because when i watched it, it just made me feel terrible and didn't encourage me at all. A lot of people are like me even if we aren't as virulent and prewent online such as "tough love" lovers. The biggest problem about fat people is their dehumanization, just like addicts in general which encourage people to be even more cruel towards us, making us even more mentally ill than before and making us crawl back to self destructive behaviour.
Again Abbey, i know you will not see this comment but I hope you know that your empathetic approach helps more than you think. Thank you. Looking forward to your other videos. ❤️
I think this show was OK. I don't see the people on it as victims. They signed up to the show. There are a lot of shows out there that is awful, especially the supersize vs superskinny. This one just opened their eyes to how delusional people can be around the food they are consuming. For people with a history of ED it's the opposite, we are obsessed with food, when our next meals are, how much we eat so we can never forget. However the majority of people aren't being mindful and genuinely forget that they did eat and do it again. I've seen my family do exactly that. Before my ED I did it all the time too, I believed I only had breakfast and would then make a massive dinner. I completely forgot I had lunch along with a whole packet of cookies and a share bag of crisps and 6 cans of soda 😅
Will you please review Bryan Johnson’s diet? He’s an anti aging guru.
I WAS OBSESSED WITH THIS SHOW LAST YEAR WHEN I WAS AT MY WORST. FINALLY SOMEONE’S TALKING ABOUT THIS SHOW
Everyone is different. Here this show was not controversial at all, helping people realise what their eating habits are really like and how to be healthier. Of course if you're in a place with your mental health that this would be triggering for you, it's your responsibility to avoid it. You shouldn't just judge something as bad because it's bad to you, this show and others like it have been very helpful for many people, including the people on the show. Emotional eating and boredom eating can get out of control if you don't pay attention. And distraction is a helpful coping mechanism. Maybe it's because you're American but this was not 'ruthless humiliation for hate watching views', you can hear them laughing in the show. Here the tone is definitely non judgemental just truthful and matter of fact- we brits can laugh at ourselves. I think you're putting a lot of your own opinions on this show that really aren't there. The people on the show are not being abused- they signed up for the show because they genuinely don't realise how much they're eating and want to lose weight. You're getting offended by a lot of the language that's just ordinary British humour- it's really not that deep. We don't have a stiff upper lip society that encourages secret eating, just normal humans that are eating mindlessly as is common for us all to do.
Yeees! I was recommending it long ago and am so happy to watch it now! What a pity I didn't see it earlier. Thank you!
I definitely secret eat to this day— 30 years old. I hate being judged for what I eat 😢
I loved this show but i found it was insightful.
So. Secret eating is something I experienced during covid lockdown.
Having lost a lot of weight the year before (40kilos), I was very sensitive about my body and weight. I started gaining during the first few months of lockdown and subsequently threw myself into a very low calorie diet. Once I got back to goal weight, I tried to loosen the reins a bit. Diet 6 days + 1 day off. After 6 straight days of eating less than 900 cals, by day 7 I was STARVING. I would go to bed early the night before but really struggled to sleep, as the anticipation of being "allowed" to eat the next day was so exciting. My body clock would wake me at 4am. I'd quietly get up and sit on the couch for hours, watching movies and eating….everything! It was horrible. I was so ashamed of myself. After a few months I realised that I was getting dangerously close to developing a full blown ED (BED pretty much). So I put an end to what was essentially that cheat day mentality. Cos boy oh boy did it get me into trouble.
The McDonald's one… I could buy a new car if I could curb that addiction
No I love this show 😂😂😂
I secret ate yesterday!!!! I was sssttreeessedd 😅
I think that what is forgotten in your video, Abby, is that they know about it and they agreed to it being on TV. It is not in secret following random people…
Thank you for this! Very good as usual! I had a look at few episodes before watching this video. I have found the show language very cynical and shaming. I also agree the show does not look at or investigate the core problem of why people are secretely eating. They hire investigators and dietitians but fail to connect all the dots. One episode i saw made the connection between someone drinking soft low calories drinks and snacking habits. That was good. But in another episode someone else's meal plan suggested by the show's dietitian included swapping sugary drinks for low sugar ones. They should have more consistent advice/investigation and updated research, as more evidence might suggest low sugar/zero calories drink or low fat food play a major part in overeating and snacking due to the blood sugar spikes. I have cut zero sugar beverages out myself and find I can go much longer between meals.
However, as you said it might make people reflect on their own secret eating habits and how they can improve and make them (me included) keep food diaries to be aware of how much they really consume.
You should take a look at the other shows Anna Richardson has been involved in. They're all problematic. And contributed to a lot of my disordered eating. This stuff is mainstream in Britain. I can list 10+ shows that promote potentially problematic messages. One of the most concerning is How to lose weight well. I just don't watch TV anymore.
The show supersize vs superskinny actually triggered my eating disorder.
Honestly, USA is the worse for those kind of programs. I am a french, and I'll always remember a program I watch when I went to America for vacation at 8. It was about someone being thin until 12 y.o and now needing an helicopter to be able to move. And of course, my naturaly thin self panicked. My EDs didn't appear to loose weight, but I think this one memory uncontienaly helped a lot…
It's less about shaming and more about bringing awareness for people who don't realize what they're eating. I think your opinion is way off, here. Some people don't have any awareness of their food intake.
Watching the secret eater made me realize I am a secret eater 😂
I think this show perfectly demonstrates how people lie to themselves and are not mindful when it comes to food. I really think the participants are being genuine when they say they don't eat much or don't eat enough and then the footage totally explains their lack of success with weight loss. I experienced this myself when I gained 3 stone because I convinced myself that I wasn't eating enough when really I was eating a ton. When I started to eat more consciously and mindfully and track my calories to an extent (without going overboard or being restrictive) I lost the weight. I would say this show is a great advert for intuitive eating because if you don't know what you're consuming, how can you lose weight. And everyone on this show undoubtedly needs to lose weight. The drinking was what shocked me. The amount Brits put away on a casual weeknight!
I secretly eat every meal because my toddler wants to eat my meal even though he eats the same thing at the same time. If I don’t secretly eat, I wouldn’t eat.
I loved watching secret eaters… in the depths of my orthorexia. Have you reacted to “Fat Families”?
I swear my cravings can last days….not stupid 20 mins!
To the first point about "shaming" the participants, well, they consented to be recorded sooooo??? Also, isnt the point that they say things like "I've done everything I could and barely eat 1200 cals and somehow I'm still fat." I think it's not as Abbey says of "portraying them as absolute liars" but moreso shedding light on just how unaware we are of our "mindless" eating- regardless of who or what size you are. I enjoyed the show and the little segments in between that showed studies and experiments regarding how our psychology can affect our eating, which was interesting that it was left out of this critique, considering it was science based.
Don't get me wrong, I understand this can trigger people or land differently with others, but I think Abbey's take was too harsh for the show as it really doesn't go so hard on the participants tbh. Also, come on Heavyweights is a funny movie lol
I found the show helpful – it highlighted some disordered eating patterns that my husband and I have and helped us be more mindful! Also if you honestly dislike Heavyweights, I'm not sure we can be friends… But it seems like you never actually watched it by the way you talk about it! It's a hilarious dark comedy, and the parents didn't knowingly send their kids to a "militant fat camp" because it was originally a loving environment that was relaxed and fun, a place where overweight kids could go and not have to worry about being teased for their weight!! It was so relaxed and accepting thar the kids never lost any weight. The camp changed owners last minute and the new owner is the psychopathic militant fitness guru with serious daddy issues, who gets overthrown when the caml stages a coup. The message at the end of the movie is very positive, and the kids learn that a balanced loving approach to their health is what feels good and helps them, and we see them happily choosing more health promoting behaviours, empowered to be the masters of their own bodies.
Many of comments I’ve seen say that they viewed the show as entertaining and even educational. To the people behind those comments, I’m happy that you feel like you could take away something from it. As a person who has a rocky relationship with food, the sort of language on the show is why I started to view my body and food they way I do! I’m still trying to unlearn this way of thinking! Maybe the participants were unfazed by their experience, but it probably wasn’t helpful for some of its viewers! So even if this show didn’t harm you, for the sakes of the people it did, I appreciate the message of this video!
Excellent weight loss tip: If you like the comfort of eating noodles, shirtaki noodles (konjac fibre) are a reasonable alternative. Gotta rinse them in a strainer, boil them in water, add them to a pan, you can include teriyaki sauce, veg, protein, herbs. It is helping me gradually overcome my emotional comfort with starchy carbs while aiding my weight loss/ maintenance of becoming more toned, also… most importantly, keeps me more energetic. So much pasta can cause a sluggish experience for the whole body and mind, and it isn't worth it for me if there's a whole day ahead.
Cheers!
Cravings only last 20 minutes? 🤣 In what world!? I will legit be obsessed with or craving a food for WEEKS sometimes. A month or so ago I started craving caramel M&Ms bad. But I couldn't find any small packages anywhere. They had the $7 and $12 bags at Walmart but I knew I didn't want that many because I tend to have trouble not binging on them. But after 2 weeks of not finding any small bags anywhere I gave in and got the $7 bag. And ate the whole thing in a 24 hour span. 🙄 But the craving is gone. If cravings only lasted 20 minutes, I wouldn't spend weeks trying to get my hands on a very specific food. Sometimes the craving goes away on its own, without me satisfying it, but it always lasts longer than 20 minutes. Usually days or weeks. I was recently craving bibibop for about 2 weeks, but that craving went away on its own.
I think the show could have helped a lot of people. Whilst these behaviours usually stem from psychological sources, I think sometimes people need to work backwards to deal with the issue (e.g. stop the overeating and then that would help the individual mentally). I think some of the derogatory language is mainly just British humour and ultimately, the participants signed up for this.
I do, however, appreciate your take on this because you highlight that many people will not solve their problematic eating habits by being 'caught out' on a show. As I said, eating issues tend to have deeper psychological issues and if you want to deal with that, therapy might be a good place to start. I'm glad you brought this up.
Either way, it was nice to get a different perspective on this show, so thanks for that!
The only time I have done "secret eating" is when I see leftover cake/cupcakes in the fridge at work from someone's birthday and someone didn't put their name on it so I sneak a lil piece and hope it doesn't belong to anyone 😅😅😅 No ED here just a possible food thief.
Yeah….. I’d be embarrassed AF if I was caught eating and then outed for it. Say what you will and how this show helped you, but I’m sure some of these people were humiliated. Brits put on a good face.
Bingo wings 😂😂😂 stop omg 😂
This show same as supersize v superskinny are very old now Abby, probably about 10 years old so we don’t watch them anymore, you should watch and review naked attraction tho!
