Hell yeah, I would prefer the Tuscan meal over starvation. It is interesting that the first Med group had consistent weigh loss and ended up losing more overall while the second Veg group gained back more weight over time, which is crash dieting. As for statistics, you can skew the data to say anything you want. It is ironic his own data proved him wrong.
I wonder if any of these so called vegan doctors selling this bollocks diet would be willing to be held accountable for their misleading advice, i bet they decline the offer
I've frequently spent time in Mediterranean and always try to eat local dishes. They contain a LOT of animal products which would preserve muscle mass and bone density during weight loss
Things you didn't know about Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine:
1. PCRM is an animal rights group, not a real âphysicians committee.â Contrary to what its name implies, less than four percent of PCRMâs members are actual physicians. Among the groupâs relatively few active physicians is PCRM president (and former PETA Foundation president) Neal Barnard, a vegan psychiatrist who claims that cheese is âdairy crackâ and âmorphine on a cracker.â
2. PCRM has been repeatedly criticized by the mainstream medical community. The American Medical Association has called PCRM a âfringe organizationâ that uses âunethical tacticsâ and is âinterested in perverting medical science.â When he was the AMAâs Vice President for Scientific Affairs, Dr. Jerod M. Loeb wrote that PCRM was âofficially censuredâ by the AMA. That statement also condemned PCRM for supporting âa campaign of misinformation against important animal research of AIDS.â And the American Academy of Neurology has denounced PCRM for âengag[ing] in a multi-year crusade against the March of Dimes including protests directed at March walkers, volunteers, and donors.â
3. PCRM promotes strict vegan diets for childrenâdespite numerous examples of serious health complications and even death brought on by plant-based diets in childhood. Ignoring the consensus among pediatricians that vegan diets can be extremely dangerous for children if not managed carefully, PCRM continues to promote childhood veganism indiscriminately.
4. PCRM discourages Americans from making donations to more than 100 respected medical charities, including the American Heart Association, the March of Dimes, the American Cancer Society, the St. Jude Childrenâs Research Hospital, the American Red Cross, the American Foundation for AIDS Research, and the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Foundationâsolely because they support disease research that requires the use of animals.
5. PCRM has created a separate deceptive charity called The Cancer Project to help push an animal-rights diet on some of the most vulnerable Americans. The Cancer Project, which shares staff, funding, and even an office with PCRM, is devoted to advancing a fringe anti-meat agenda and promoting the false belief that only a strict vegan diet can minimize the risk of cancer.
Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine is a scam, if you look that up in Google, you find all sorts of things. Turns out official medical associations don't even recognize them. If I link to things, this site deletes links but there was medical establishments saying that PCRM is a fringe organization. I don't know how they're able to do what they do with medical authorities being against them so much but yea, that's the gist.
I can't fathom actually being happy going off a Mediterranean diet for a vegan one. It looks like there are plenty of folks out there unhappy with Barnard's "results."
Iâm so tired of veganism being pushed as a cure all for everything. As someone who became anemic and very sickly while on a vegetarian diet, I cannot fathom how many people will get sick from being pushed to become vegan. If I donât have solid animal based protein on the daily I feel weak and my brain starts to get foggy.
Anybody else notice how much faster the weight gain of the original vegan group was during the rest period compared to the Mediterranean? They definitely missed their meats haha
I'd like to know what they mean by "the Mediterranean Diet" because anyone who's ever been to that part of the world knows that Mediterranean people eat a lot of meat and seafood…especially seafood…and lots of beautiful cheeses and cold cuts, not just pasta. But their "research" was obviously biased from the start and I trust their results about as far as I could throw them.
Yeah but did they lose water weight? Fat? Muscles? Did they gain water? Fat? Muscle? How many calories did each group eat? You can easily eat more calories from carbs and fat vs. Veggies. Did they eat enough calories for their height etc. Very weak study!
It seems Dr. Barnard is as obsessed with being skinny & weight loss like Leanne (Freelee), Kristina, Victoria, Erin (Eat Move Rest), Natasha etc. All of them simply equate weight loss to being healthy without considering other issues/factors. The body continually evolves/changes so there will always be adaptive changes to one's diet. Nothing is fixated forever.
My buddy lost even more weight than the vegans in this study when he went to jail for 8 months. We can conclude now that the Prison Diet is healthiest of all!
I lost weight as a vegan and even more as a raw vegan. I was already slim to begin with :/ I lost fat, muscle, and my bones were weaker. It's been 4 months since then, and I'm the heaviest I've ever weighed, and I'm so happy. Muscle restored. Bone strength restored. Beautiful fat on my hourglass figure. Silhouette > weight loss. Our weight comprises of many things.
I don't think vegans can see the forest for the trees. In other words, they are so worried about individual health issues such as diabetes or heart disease, that they fail to notice the overall damage they are doing to their bodies. Dr Barnard and Dr MacDougall do not look healthy at all. Maybe they look healthy on paper, but really.
Weight loss is the only thing the vegan diet has going for itself and they know that very well, hence why it's their sole focus. If they were to compare anything else, like nutrient intake/levels and associated health outcomes in the long run – they'd lose against Mediterranean diets (or any healthy omnivore diets that mostly focus on whole foods).
If weight loss is this drastic on the vegan diet, it's just another reason for hard gainers like me to stay as far away from it as possible. I started working out in the beginning of March and as hard as it is for me to gain, I would never be able to accomplish gains I need to put on muscle by taking away half the food choices I have on a normal diet. Gassy vegans can keep their bean replacements. No thanks.
'Chuck Carroll [PCRM host] is.. known widely as The Weight Loss Champion. Chuck weighed 420 pounds and had a 66-inch waist before radically changing his life. Out of desperation, he decided to have weight loss surgery in 2009. He woke up from the surgery and never looked back. Although a critical component.. he only attributes 10 percent of his long-term weight loss success to it. The rest he credits to a plant-based diet and changing his lifestyle! By adopting a plant-based diet, he is no longer afraid of regaining the weight as he had so many times before â no more yo-yo dieting!'
Seems strange vegans would do a study with any non vegan food. He said what ? Pasta, wine? I don't know it is a real Mediterranean diet they were using.
Lemme comment – Iâm on Ray peat way of eating – fruits meat and carbs . But when I tried out durian rider protocol of sugary fruit smoothies and rice . I had incredible incredible energy .

You can drop a lot of weight when you lose all your muscle mass and bone density
This "study" is hilarious and proves absolutely nothing. These people are complete jokes.
Well we always knew starvation diets cause weight loss đ

U sound ignorant. U dont like this guys opinion because he did a study. U have done nothing but state an unsupported opinion.

Vegans being obsessed by weight loss as usual hmmm wonder why???đ€đŹđ

PCRM is an animal rights group masked as a medical nonprofit.

I also felt betrayed by this group.

What is the âvegan dietâ that he put them on? Itâs not very specific đ
I seen the crack addict look. Not only skinny. The dead eyes like the soul left long time ago. Vegans get look.

4000 years of recorded human history and we have this…
Wtf is the Mediterranean diet? Im eating according to the diet of my Nile valley ancestors thanks.

Itâs scary that a physician would label a diet thatâs causing rapid weight loss âhealthierââŠ

More weight loss more better. "The best human diet seems to be laxatives." -Vegan logic
"This human diet is so popular not necessary because it works but…"
